It is the largest city in Morocco and its industrial center; a huge metropolis where elegant western suits and designer sunglasses are gaining ground on traditional Moroccan clothing. Casablanca suffered a serious decline until the French, when they made Morocco their Protectorate in 1912, decided to restore it and built large avenues, public parks and imposing Moorish-style civil buildings. The medina or old quarter is worth a visit. Casablanca shares the Mohammed V airport with Rabat, where regular flights are scheduled to and from half the world.
